On Shaky Ground - Drop, Cover, And Hold!

During an earthquake, you can stay as safe as possible by following three simple steps. Just remember to drop, cover, and hold. The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), the American Red Cross, and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommend these steps:
- Drop to the ground. You are safer on the ground, where you can't lose your balance and fall while the earth is shaking.
- Take cover. If possible, get underneath a table, desk, or other sturdy piece of furniture. Cover your face with your arm to protect your eyes from flying glass or other sharp objects. If you are in bed, stay there and protect your head with your pillow.
- Hold. If you are under a desk or table, hold on to a leg of the furniture with your free arm. Stay where you are until the shaking stops. Trying to move to a different location during an earthquake could result in serious injury.
