On Shaky Ground - Don't Panic
earthquake prepared control stay
The most important thing to remember during an earthquake is to stay calm. Panic is one of the leading causes of injury during and after an earthquake. Panic can cause you to forget the things for which you are prepared. People who lose control may try to run away or leave a building instead of finding a safe place to drop, cover, and hold on. When adults and teenagers panic, small children are also more likely to be frightened.
To avoid panicking during an actual earthquake, practice the steps you would take beforehand. Know exactly what you will do if an earthquake ever strikes. Being prepared will help you to stay in control, keeping you and others around you as safe as possible. Frequently repeating your plan of action will allow you to be better prepared to deal with the aftermath of an earthquake.
