Biosphere Reserve

Natural, Area, Dedicated, Designed, Bioreserve, Large, Ecosystems, and Biosphere

A large, protected area of natural habitat, established by UNESCO under the Man and the Biosphere Programme. Designed to create a representative network of the world's ecosystems where research and monitoring activities are conducted, with the participation of local communities, to protect and preserve healthy natural systems threatened by development. Each reserve contains a core area (dedicated to preserving biodiversity with no human interference) and a buffer zone. See also bioreserve.
