Sandusky, Ohio is a relatively small city situated on the shores of beautiful Lake Erie in the Midwestern United States. Founded in 1774, the city for most of its existence had a relatively sleepy history except for when the town was used as a stop on the Underground Railroad before the illegalization of slavery. In more recent years, however, the city has been frequented by over three million visitors every year who flock to the city’s world famous amusement park, Cedar Point.
Cedar Point is famous for being one of the largest amusement parks in the United States. In fact, the park has more rides than any other amusement park on the planet. Out of its 75 rides, 17 are roller coasters, which is also more than any other park in the world. Despite the fact the park is famous for the chilling thrills of its roller coasters, there are also 11 family rides and 28 children’s rides to enjoy. Other attractions that are a part of the Cedar Point complex include a mile of white sandy beach as well as Soak City, a water park with 10 water slides, 2 lazy rivers, a wave pool, activity pools, and more.
Thankfully for the millions of guests, there are plenty of great Sandusky, Ohio hotels to choose from. A number of these great hotels are in fact owned by Cedar Fair Entertainment, the parent company of Cedar Point.
The oldest of these Sandusky, Ohio hotels is the Hotel Breakers. Built in 1905, it has been a destination for many of the rich and powerful. Famous guests who have stayed at the hotel include President Theodore Roosevelt, Helen Keller, and the comedy duo, Abbot and Costello. The hotel is famous for its breath-taking view of Lake Erie. It in fact sits right on the Cedar Fair Entertainment’s private stretch of beach. Not only is the hotel on the beach, but it is also walking distance from the Cedar Point amusement park.
The hotel does indeed have an excellent location as well as 650 gorgeous rooms and suites. However, it is also chock full of amenities. Free Wi-Fi internet can be accessed in the hotel’s lobby, conference center, and rotunda. In addition to access to the beach, there is one outdoor pool, one indoor pool, and three whirlpools. The hotel also has five restaurants on its property including a deli, an ice cream parlor, and a T.G.I. Friday’s.
However, there are also plenty of great Sandusky, Ohio hotels that are not owned by Cedar Fair Entertainment. One of the most family friendly of these that is pretty much a tourist attraction in and of itself is the Kalahari Resort. The Kalahari resort is actually part of a chain of resorts that also includes a similar resort in Wisconsin Dells, Wisconsin.
The Kalahari Resort is so popular because in addition to its hotel it includes both an indoor and an outdoor private water park on its property. In fact, the resort’s indoor water park is the largest in the world and takes up a whopping 173,000 square feet of space. These water parks include several slides, lazy rivers, activity pools, and a 12,000 square foot wave pool.
The Kalahari Resort’s rooms are also a spectacular site to behold. Every room and suite in the resort is decorated with authentic African art and furniture. With 900 rooms and suites in total, it is also quite unlikely that the resort will be completely booked up at any given time.
Of course, these two options may be more expensive than most. Thankfully, there are also plenty of Sandusky, Ohio hotels in much more moderate price ranges for families on a budget. One of the best of these less expensive options is the Comfort Inn. While not walking distance away like the Hotel Breakers, the hotel is only a short drive away from the Cedar Point amusement park.
This quality Sandusky hotel also isn’t bare of amenities. The hotel has an indoor pool, an outdoor pool, hot tub, and sauna. Guests also have the ability to obtain access to the internet as well as fax services supplied by the hotel. Lastly, those on a budget will be happy to know that a stay at the Comfort Inn includes complimentary breakfast every morning.
