Customer service representatives are the face of a company and a link between the company and its customers. Most customer service representatives interact through phone but some also use other modes of communication like email, chat, fax and face to face support.

Customer service requests generally include product information requests, order status requests, refund or exchange requests and technical support queries, depending on the product. Complaints must be handled by suggesting viable solutions in accordance with company policies. Some customer service representatives may also be involved in sales. The nature of work is comparable to that of a virtual assistant, however the major difference is that you are focusing on handling customer inquiries only.

As a work from home customer service rep or a virtual customer service agent, you must have a fully functional laptop or desktop and a fixed analog landline. Some providers have software that supports VoIP but this is rare. You must also have a reliable internet service with unlimited bandwidth because of the nature of work.

You have the option of signing up as a part-time or a full-time customer service representative. This is a good income opportunity for stay-at-home moms and students. By working four hours a day or twenty hours a week, you can get hands on experience in the customer service industry.

Third party providers such as Alpine Access offer work at home customer service employment opportunities. 1-800-Flowers, Walgreens and Virgin Atlanta are known to hire virtual customer service agents. You can also find telemarketing or telesales work through freelance job boards. Companies prefer to carry freelance work on an hourly rate. As a virtual agent, you will get the same benefits as any regular employee. This includes health and medical insurance and 401k plans too.

According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, customer services representatives held 2.3 million jobs in 2008, making it one of the largest occupations in the United States. As of May 2008 the average hourly wage was $14.36.

Some caution is advised before you sign up as a work from customer service agent. Do not sign up with websites that require you make some deposit in order for you to work or sites that have a poor overall layout.
