Chicago Attorney Jobs - Are There Any Chicago Attorney Jobs Available?

legal market increase attorneys

The US legal market has taken a pounding in the past few years. For the first time, the legal market suffered unmeasured effects from an economic downturn. A record number of job losses occurred within the legal market proving that lawyers and legal professionals are not immune to economic downturns. Countless attorneys lost their jobs and many highly credentialed attorneys have remained unemployed for more than a year.

The Chicago legal market was no different. In the past few years, the availability of Chicago attorney jobs nearly became non-existent. Many unemployed Chicago attorneys left the city for job opportunities in other parts of the country. However, there are reports coming out that Chicago is starting to slowly add attorney jobs again and the legal market is picking up.

With many of the Chicago law firms engaging in attorney job reductions in the past year or so, associate hiring for Chicago attorney jobs is increasing at a slug’s pace. As the economy recovers from one of the worse recessions in United States’ history, Chicago attorney jobs at the associate level will continue to pick up based upon practice area and need. Conversely, Chicago attorney jobs at the partner level remain extremely active and partners with large books of business continue to be wooed and have their pick of the firms.

Chicago attorney jobs for federal government positions are expected to continue to increase due to the increase in government regulation of the banking, securities and other financial sectors. Currently, hiring for entry level attorney jobs remains stable. While federal government lateral hiring is increasing, hiring for Chicago attorney jobs within state and local governments is largely frozen due to a drop in tax revenues. Chicago attorney jobs for the public interest sector are down, with Legal Aid being hit particularly hard because of a decrease in the availability of IOLTA funds. On the flip side, there has been an increase in volunteer assistance at Legal Aid due to the large numbers of attorneys that were laid off.

The market seems to be experiencing stabilization in client demand for legal services. As this demand increases, there will be an increase in the amount of Chicago attorney jobs available, but this increase will be gradual. Many experts don’t see the availability of Chicago attorney jobs returning to normal levels for another few years.
