Airport Hotels Gatwick - Hotels at Gatwick Airport

little hilton shuttle terminal

Gatwick Airport, the second largest airport in the United Kingdom, is a connection point for people traveling between the continent and North America. Often these travelers have only a short layover between connections. Others are looking for an opportunity to relax and recover from jet lag before beginning their European holiday.

The hotels at Gatwick offer a wide selection of accomodations to meet any traveler’s needs. For the time conscious who need just a few hours there is the YOTEL right in the airport itself. These self contained high tech cubicles are available in deluxe, standard and economy versions. Each offers a bed, bath and work area in a 7 square meter area. Day rates are charged regardless of hours used.

There are some negatives. The rooms are not sound proof. Travelers who are light sleepers will need earplugs that truly block out sound. There have been continual complaints of air conditioning and TVs not working. The rooms do not accommodate 2 people comfortably. A couple might make do but 2 friends sharing would find it extremely uncomfortable. The price at 80 pounds is not considered budget.

Yotel is ideal for a traveler with a very short stay between flights.

At the high end of the price spectrum is the 4 star Gatwick Hilton. Situated immediately adjacent to the south terminal with a shuttle available to the north terminal, this hotel offers the convenience of actually being at the airport. It is connected to the south terminal by a short roofed walkway which is particularly helpful in inclement weather. The Hilton has all the amenities associated with a 4 star hotel. It has two restaurants, a gym, and oversize rooms large enough for a family of five. Booking one of the special executive rooms entitles one access to the Executive Lounge area which is similar to the airline VIP lounge concept. The Hilton high standard of quintessential service and extremely well maintained premises are clearly visible at the Gatwick.

The only negative encountered was the late check in at 3 pm. Early check INS are possible with additional charges. Being a HILTON this is definitely not a budget hotel.

The Gatwick Hilton is just a 30 minute train ride to the center of London which is one of its more popular amenities.

The Premier Inn located just 400 yards from the north terminal is the true budget hotel at Gatwick. Travelers with little luggage may prefer to walk to the Premier. There is a small shuttle which is often filled to capacity making it necessary to wait for a subsequent trip. The shuttle stop is NOT easy to find. A taxi from the north terminal is 10 pounds.

The rooms at the Premier Inn are quite large, clean and quite comfortably furnished. Surprising discovery is the use of very high thread count bed linens. Baths are nicely sized which is not expected in a budget hotel. Amenities include in room internet access and coffee/tea service.

Daytime check ins go smoothly. Staff is courteous and helpful. Night time staff can be less than helpful at times.

The food is quite good with a wide range of menu choices. The dining room is usually very busy. There can be a wait to get a table. The service can be less than satisfactory during peak hours.

The hotel is used by travelers making flight connections at all hours of the day and night. Middle of the night comings and goings of other guests in nearby rooms can be disturbing. Light sleepers should request help from the staff. It does not hurt to ask to be assigned a room that is not adjacent to one where the occupant has requested a 3 a.m. wakeup call. A traveler willing to anticipate that problems might arise with the shuttle, the check in and meal service, will still find the Premier truly the best hotel buy at Gatwick.

Delightful alternatives to commercial hotels are found in a number of Bed and Breakfasts located near Gatwick. A very highly regarded B and B is the Little Foxes. This B and B is about 15 minutes from Gatwick with free shuttle to and from the airport. It is a large English country home set in a three acre wooded area amid beautiful gardens with no surrounding buildings.

Everything about the Little Foxes is charming. The rooms are well decorated and very tastefully furnished. The baths are a delight. There is broad band internet access, wifi and TV. A traditional full English breakfast is served. There is free transport to local restaurants in Crawley for evening meals.

Long term outdoor parking for guests going away on holiday is offered at a much cheaper rate than the airport adjacent parking lots.

The price for an overnight stay and breakfast at the Little Foxes is a welcome respite from the high cost of commercial hotels. If bed and breakfast accomodations are of interest, the Little Foxes is a good value at Gatwick Airport.
